ツルモドキ (Aramus guarauna)

ツルモドキの親子（Parents and children of Limpkin）

2014年8月2日、アスンシオンのニュワス公園(Parque Ñu Guazu)を散歩した。今回、ツルモドキの親子を見ることができた。
August 2, 2014, I took a walk in the park Nyuwasu, Asuncion (Parque Ñu Guazu). This time, I was able to see parents and children of Limpkin.

公園にある池周辺の草原にツルモドキが2羽いるのが見えた。私は逆光状態になる場所にいたので順光状態になる場所に移動した。あれっ、2羽以外に幼鳥が2羽いる。
I could see two Limpkins at the wetland along the pond in the park. So I was in place where the bird was in backlight state, I moved to the location where the bird was facing the sun light. Uh-oh, two chicks are there other than two birds.

親鳥は私が見ているので（100m以上は離れているが）幼鳥を呼び寄せて背の高い草原に誘導し始めたようだ。
The parents seem to have started to induce their chicks towards the tall grass field because I am watching them (although more than 100m away).

幼鳥は親鳥の後をゆっくり歩いていく。「背の高い草の間に入りなさい」、と言っているようだ。そして幼鳥の姿は隠れて見えなくなった。
Young birds were walking slowly after their parents. It seems the parent birds to say “Hide in these tall grasses.” Then the young birds have hidden totally.

ツルモドキの通常の動作はスローモーションのようだが、その飛ぶ姿はツルのように優雅だ。
Normal action of Limpkin is like a slow motion, but the figure of flying is elegant as crane.

ニュワス公園のツルモドキ（Limpkin at Parque Ñu Guazu）

水辺を徘徊する不思議な鳥 (A strange loitering bird around waterside) 2014年7月5日、アスンシオン中心街からやや遠い大きな公園に行った。広い敷地に沢山の樹木が茂っていて、池も2つある。池周辺の草原に中型の鳥がいた。最初正面から見たとき、クイナより大きく嘴が下に湾曲しているように見えたのでトキ科の鳥かなと思った。

July 5, 2014, I went to a large park a little farther from downtown Asuncion. Many trees are growing there and also two ponds are. There was a medium-sized bird in wet grassland along the pond. At the first glance of its front view I thought it would be in the ibis family because it was bigger than the water rail and the beak seemed curved beneath.

横顔を見るとトキ科の鳥とは違う、動作も緩慢としている。不思議な雰囲気を持つ鳥だ。
The profile of the bird is different from the bird of the ibis family and it moves slowly. It is a bird with a magical atmosphere.

Wikiを見ると、ツルモドキと言う和名を持ち本種のみでツルモドキ科ツルモドキ属を構成する。外部形態や生態はクイナ科、内部形態はツル科との共通性が多く、2科の中間、ないしよりツル科に近縁な分類群と考えられている、とある。やはり不思議な鳥だ。主に貝類等を食べ、嘴もそれに適応している。これがこの鳥の環境適応らしい。
Wiki says that the limpkin is placed in its own monotypic family, Aramidae. More recent DNA studies have confirmed a close relationship with particularly the cranes, with the limpkin remaining as a family close to the cranes and the two being sister taxa to the trumpeters. It is really a strange bird. It eats mainly shellfish, etc. and beak also adapted to it. This seems to be environmental adaptation of this bird.
