ナンベイタゲリの懐刀 (Dagger of Southern lapwing)
- ニュワス公園の草原に行くといつも複数のナンベイタゲリに出会う。飛立ったナンベイタゲリはテリトリーに侵入した人間の方に向かって叫び声を上げながら威嚇するように飛んでくることが多い。それだけではない。以前グラシエラ牧場でナンベイタゲリが叫び声を上げながら大きいヒメコンドルに空中戦を仕掛けている光景を見た。なぜこのような攻撃的な行動を取れるのだろうと不思議だった。 今回、飛ぶナンベイタゲリの写真を撮ってみてその理由の一つが分かった。この鳥は空中戦用の武器を持っていた。
- I always come across some Southern lapwings when I go to the grassy plain of Ñu Guazu Park. The flown-up Southern lapwings often make a menacing flight towards the person who invaded their territory continuing the harsh calls. In addition, I watched the scene before at the Graciela Ranch that a Southern Lapwing was chasing persistently a big Turkey vulture screaming loudly. I have been wondering why this bird might have such an aggressive action. This time, I understood one of the reasons by taking photos of the flying figure the Southern lapwing. This bird has a weapon for aerial dogfights.

ニュワス公園の草原に行くといつも複数のナンベイタゲリに出会う。大抵2羽以上一緒にいる。近寄ろうとすると、けたたましい鳴き声を上げながら飛び立ち、鳴き声を続けながら上空を旋回してまた着地する。この警戒音を聞いて他の鳥も避難行動に移るのを見かける。
I always come across some Southern lapwings when I go to the grassy plain of Ñu Guazu Park. The bird flies up with very loud and harsh calls when I am going to approach, and the bird flies around in the sky continuing the harsh calls then lands again. I sometimes see other birds also move to evacuation to hear this warning sound.

飛立ったナンベイタゲリはテリトリーに侵入した人間の方に向かって叫び声を上げながら威嚇するように飛んでくることが多い。この鳥のこのような攻撃的な行動は現地の農業関係者からも聞いたことがある。

今回、飛ぶナンベイタゲリの写真を撮ってみてその理由の一つが分かった。この鳥は空中戦用の武器を持っていた。動物の親指に相当する鋭い骨が翼から前向きに飛び出ているのだ。空中戦でこの爪が敵の翼に引っかかればかなりのダメージを与えるだろう。ただ、コンドルなどには有効だろうが、他の獰猛なワシなどに立ち向かえば返り討ちにもつながる。
This time, I understood one of the reasons by taking photos of the flying figure the Southern lapwing. This bird has a weapon for aerial dogfights. Sharp spurs equivalent to the thumb of the animal jumps out of a wing forward. The spurs may cause some serious damage to the enemy if they catch its wing during the aerial dogfight. Such an action may be effective for condors, but the Southern lapwing will be killed by its intended victim such as other ferocious eagles.

ナンベイタゲリは地上にえらく簡単な巣を作る。簡単に外敵に襲われるのではと疑問が生じる。でもこの鳥は南米で大変一般的な鳥であり、近年生息域を中米にも広げていると言う。この鳥にはこの鳥のアグレッシブな環境適応性があるようだ。
Southern lapwing makes a really simple nest on the ground. A question occurs that it is easily attacked by a foreign enemy. But this bird is a very general bird in South America and it is said that its habitation area is spreading in Central America lately. This bird seems to have its own aggressive environmental adaptability.
