It is the only member of the genus Machetornis.It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are pastureland and heavily degraded former forest. Due to deforestation, the species has recently colonized areas where it was previously absent, such as northeast Ecuador.Cattle Tyrants feed on parasitic arthropods on mammals, an example of mutualism.

- 2014年8月30日、アスンシオン中心街からバスで30分くらいの所にあるニュワス公園(Parque Ñu Guazu)に行った。 今回初めて、ウシタイランチョウ頭部の赤毛を見ることができた。それは普段は隠れていて見えないのです。
- August 30, 2014, I went to Nyuwasu park (Parque Ñu Guazu) in the place of about 30 minutes by bus from Asuncion city center. This day, I was able to see the red feather on the head of Cattle Tyrant for the first time. It does not appear being hidden normally.
この公園の草原でよくウシタイランチョウを見かけます。オリーブタイランチョウと似ているのですが、証拠写真を撮れました。 頭部の赤毛が見えたのです。普段は隠れていて見えないのです。
I see Cattle Tyrant well in grasslands of this park. It resembles Tropical Kingbird, but I could take the photographic evidence. I was able to see the red feather on the head of Cattle Tyrant for the first time. It does not appear being hidden normally.

地面を歩きながらさえずっています。また頭部の赤毛が見えました。肉眼では気付きませんでした。
The bird is singing while walking on the ground. The red feather of the head was visible again, though I could not see by my naked eyes.

アスンシオンで見かけるウシタイランチョウ (Cattle tyrant seen in Asuncion)
アスンシオン中心街の広場で見かけたウシタイランチョウ 、人をあまり気にしない (パラグアイ国アスンシオン市ウルグアイ広場 2013/09/28-11:02, SX50)
2013年4月26日、アスンシオン大学工学部CITEC構内の庭に馬が2頭フラリとやってきた。2階の廊下から見下ろしていたら2種類の小鳥が近づいてきた。馬が草を食んでいる近くに来て餌を散策しているんだろうか。腹部が黄色っぽい小鳥は公園でもよく見かけます。牛や馬の背に乗ったりする身近な小鳥だそうです。でもこの時は馬の背に乗らなかった。
