ベニタイランチョウの空中ハンティング (Aerial hunting of Vermillion Flycatcher)

ベニタイランチョウは飛ぶ虫を見つけると止まり木から瞬発的に飛び出し空中で虫を追いまた戻る。その範囲は飛ぶ小さい虫を目で追うことの出来る5m程度だ。人間の目の視野は広いのでこの範囲の華麗な空中ハンティングを楽しむことが出来る。でも飛行ルートを予測できないのでビデオ撮影は難しい。今回、花の近くに止まったベニタイランチョウをビデオ撮影したら、画面の範囲内で虫を追ってくれた。カメラに向かって獲物に迫る姿は、美しい小さい小鳥のイメージとは全く異なり猛禽類のように見えた。また止まり木に戻った姿は元の美しい小さい小鳥だった。
Vermillion Flycatcher usually catches insects in mid-air, after a short sally flight from a perch. The flight range is about 5m where the bird can follow the small flying insect with its eyes. We can look at and enjoy the splendid aerial hunting because the view range of human eye is wide enough for it. But video shoot is difficult because it is impossible to predict the flight route. This time however, while I was taking a video of the Vermillion Flycatcher on a perch near the flower, it chased insect within the video screen. The figure on the heels of prey toward the camera looked like birds of prey, which is quite different from the image of the small beautiful bird. Its figure after coming back the perch was an original small beautiful bird.

獲物を目がけて出撃した。カメラに向かって獲物に迫る姿は、美しい小さい小鳥のイメージとは全く異なり猛禽類のように見える。

小鳥は獲物の近くで羽を大きく広げ急旋回した。小鳥が獲物を捕ったかどうかは分からない。
The bird made a sharp turn near the prey by outstretching wings. I cannot see whether the bird caught the prey or didn’t.

急旋回したので太陽の光で紅色の腹部が見える。 Red abdomen can be seen in the sun light because of its sharp turn.
